What is it and why does it matter?

 

Transactional Competence™ is a proven framework that helps you and your team members to work better together and keep on track. This research-based approach has assisted our clients to get more done with less resources, especially when dealing with diverse personalities.

Implementing Transactional Competence means training and developing ourselves, teams, and companies to be fitter and fitter to engage in successful and efficient exchanges. Human exchange is at the core of everything we do. When we become proficient in mastering our everyday interactions with people, we reduce friction and dysfunction which is typically associated with working in a group.

We also become more influential and significantly better at communicating and influencing effectively with colleagues, executives, and direct reports alike.

We are constantly hearing that individuals in work organisations are feeling more and more stress and pressure, with the demands of increased living expenses amongst other things. Mental health continues to be a key challenge for many. We firmly believe that Transactional Competence can help address the stress people feel, not just by ensuring smoother transactions in the workplace, but also by helping them understand their own preferences, limitations, and communication styles along with those of their team members. How much stress is caused by team dynamics and people not feeling appreciated, understood, or accepted?

This body of work has been developed and refined over 30 years and is grounded in the philosophy of Transactionalism. Whilst the resources available are extensive and too many to mention here, they are based on the following core models:

Transaction Cycle

A transaction cycle is a series of exchanges that happen in a certain order to complete a successful transaction. It includes fundamental exchanges that are important in all human transactions.

If you skip or ignore any step in the cycle, it may cause problems for you. By studying and understanding the cycle, you can gain insights that will help you in your transactions.

Personality Framework

Different personalities are drawn to different phases of the transaction cycle. This is not a ‘put people in a box’ exercise, rather a way for people to focus on how we behave in transactions. This framework acknowledges that we all bring value to human exchanges and helps us recognise patterns in our behaviour rather than defining ourselves by them.

Planning, Strategy, Tactics and Implementation

There is a lot of information in the business world around strategy. But one key missing point is how in order to achieve what you want, a key principle is planning, and specifically having a rigorous inquiry around the limited resources available. This framework is based on the transaction cycle and has helped our clients to achieve more with less and minimise the friction and dysfunction involved.

The Conditions of Life

Condition of Life™ refers to the circumstances, states, or situations that are necessary for personal satisfaction. Ignoring these conditions does not make them disappear, and some conditions may become more or less important as a person progresses through life.

Moreover, we believe that neglecting the most important of these conditions (those in gold) can result in a difficult and challenging life.

Our transactions are driven by our aims within each of the 15 Unavoidable Conditions of Life™.

 

Thirteen steps

This is a core concept of our curriculum used to guide the building of any successful transaction to satisfy aims in any or all Conditions of Life.

The Thirteen Steps offers a roadmap to think accurately about the construction of the simple or complex transactions that wholly satisfy your aims.

 

Five stages of professional influence

When we have a high level of influence, we are known for our value, have an ambitious peer group that reinforces our aims and have planned a long term strategy and effective team to enact it. We have built an environment to do the heavy lifting for us and are ultimately working towards our legacy being maintained and immortalised in our absence.

Infinity Loops

Over many years we’ve noticed that each personality falls into loops of narratives that start out moving properly, and the transaction takes off with power. However, after that initial move (left to their own devices), they will skip or dismiss critical aspects of the transaction, and everything will begin to fall apart.

90 mins introductory facilitated Transactional Competence session

Until end November, we are offering a complimentary session where we can share the fundamentals of Transactional Competence with your team. In this session, we will introduce you and your team to

  • The transaction cycle

  • The narratives

  • Behavioural styles (values and costs)

This will include a high level working example of how it can be applied to both your people dynamics and your processes.

We recommend we send each participant a questionnaire beforehand to gather some more information about how they feel about their  current situation and to identify a specific example of something going on right now that we can workshop.

At the end of the workshop, your attendees would have a fundamental understanding of Transactional Competence and the potential for it to positively impact their professional (and likely personal) lives.

What are future options?

For business

Short term courses

The following courses are delivered over 12 hours (each) and will delve deeply into the specific topic. These can be held over 2 x 6 hours, 3 x 4 hours or whatever configuration suits. A full Learning Management System (LMS) is accessed and at completion of each course is a short quiz. A pass rate of minimum 75% is rewarded with a Credly badge, as these are recognised online qualifications.

Longer duration options

There are other offerings available which are designed to be delivered over a longer period of time, in order to apply the learnings into everyday life and assess and refine. There are typically 12 modules, which are each delivered via 60 minute sessions.
