COACHING
People in Engineering, Science, Finance and Tech are often perfectionists and place an extreme amount of pressure on themselves and others. This can have quite an impact on their own wellbeing, and of those around them.
Coaching is a proven way to help individuals get some self awareness about their high standards, whilst also increasing productivity, satisfaction and engagement. But often coaching partnerships end up being a little underwhelming. There are some incredible coaches who are available to support your teams across the board, but you want to make sure you get the right fit. Here are some reasons I think coaching fails;
There is only a focus on work vs the whole person (ie their personal life)
Some individuals are too clever for their own good, and can dodge the tricky questions, and end up controlling the sessions.
There is sometimes a tendency to avoid the hidden stories and confronting patterns.
I have been coaching at an executive level since 2012, and use a combination of strategies drawn from Neuroscience, the art of Influence, Transactionalism, Productivity/High Performance and Wellness. A coaching partnership will include a minimum of four sessions, and will focus on helping the team member to get clarity on what’s important to them, across all areas of life, and what’s getting in their way. In some instances a 360 degree assessment may be completed by their colleagues to provide some insight into how they are occurring for others. Wellbeing and resilience is a key focus as is working on their belief structures and values. Here is a typical coaching roadmap;
